There are several aspects to composing a great resume and they are equally important. You have the visual aspect of your resume format and the verbiage used to describe your career history and the overall value you bring to the table. An unbalanced resume will get you nowhere in today’s job market. We often refer jobseekers to look at our executive resume samples when they want to know what a good resume looks like.

Compelling Verbiage

Strong verbiage is a must-have in a resume that will grab the attention of hiring managers. Making sure your resume is well written serves several purposes. First and foremost, you want to stand out by enticing the reader with colorful language that positions you as a leader and action taker versus just a doer or follower.

Relevant Keywords

A resume with great keywords will help you get past Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). All too often, an applicant doesn’t get seen because their resume had weak bullet points, a lack of examples of achievements and overall irrelevant content. Not including enough words can mean not making into a hiring officials hands.

Excellent Formatting

The way your resume looks definitely conveys your level of professionalism. You want to look the part of the role you’re after on paper. A resume that has a bit of tasteful color, matching fonts and bullet points, is inviting to read and easy to digest will fare better than one that’s not organized with dense blocks of text. Too little or too much white space can be a problem as well. Hiring officials will look at your resume for a matter of 6 seconds before they decide if they want to call you or not. The way your resume looks, does indeed play an important role.

Free of Typos and Mistakes

When a prospective employer is looking over your resume, the last thing they want to see is typos. This will almost immediately get your resume set aside during the 6 second scan. Remember that you are up against hundreds of other applicants and the person reviewing your resume is looking to narrow down their list and make the selection process easier. Don’t give them reason to eliminate you. Ask a friend to look over your resume carefully for typos. You can hire a resume writer to do this for you as well.
